My Good Deed Story
Last year, during the summer vacations, I went with my family to India to spend time with my grandparents. There, I encountered something that would change my life forever. I had gone shopping with my parents in my car. It was raining heavily. When the car stopped at a red light, I looked out the window and saw a sight that sent shockwaves down my spine. Lying next to the garbage bin was a small girl, fully drenched and shivering, obviously ill. Flies were hovering over her. Before she could do anything, the car moved on. I kept looking at the girl till she disappeared from view.
I was very unhappy that day. I didn't eat anything or play outside. I kept thinking, "How can I help that little girl? How? I' not rich. I am so small."
Then it struck me. As my grandfather always says, "I can do something with my little hands. I can do whatever is possible on my behalf and god will do the rest." One thing I do very well is making paper quilling earrings. I just take a strand of colored paper, roll it on a stick, fix a hook and ZAP! One pair of earrings, ready! All my relatives even kept asking me for some of my earrings. I thought, "What if I sold these earrings and use the money to help some kids?"
That was the moment when I received a revelation in life. I started making as many earrings as I could. In a few months' time I was able to collect a neat amount. Through my mom I contacted an organization who worked for street children. They told me that my contribution would help give food and vaccinations to 34 kids. I've been doing this ever since. My target is to help as many street children as possible.
What was my motivation?
My motivation was the little girl, lying near the garbage heap, helpless. I had watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Albus Dumbledore says, "It is not our abilities that show what we truly are… it is our choices." That was why I made a choice to use my time for those less fortunate than I am.
The Outcome of the Good Deed
I was able to help 34 kids. That was magical. I think the happiness that I felt and the happiness they will feel is the best outcome.
What is my next Good Deed?
My next good deed is to make sure that I can make enough earrings and earn enough to sponsor child health and education for an entire village as suggested by the organization I approached.
